People say oil and water don't mix. And so racially-mixed congregations won't predominately work. Ah, but have they ever looked at the ingredients on a jar of mayonnaise? There it states: "Oil, water..." How do they mix? Through an emulsifier (in this case, "egg"). How do multi-racial congregations stay together? Through an Emulsifier. And in this case it is the twofold Gospel of Christ: (a) We are worse sinners than we thought BUT... (b) The Lord loves us much deeper than we ever dared to dream. THAT is Christ's Gospel of Grace which EMULSIFIES us! Furthermore, when all we have is predominately white or black or Chinese or Korean or Latino congregations, those kinds of churches can easily make the Gospel tangential. But when the this two-pronged Gospel is THE main thing we have in common (in multiracial congregations such as the one I pastor in The First State of Delaware, then we don't get together to chat about our golf game or stock portfolio or favorite celebrities or sports teams. Rather, we talk about how we're sinners in need of the Savior. Thus the Gospel becomes central...indeed, the Emulsifier. If you are ever in Wilmington, Delaware (right off I-95 just south of Philadelphia and just north of Baltimore)--exactly two hours north of Washington DC and two hours south of New York City--come visit us on a Sunday between 4-7 pm at 1800 Limestone Rd (route 7)...Wilmington, DE 19808
I like the idea of the 'emulsifier'. Seems like it applies not only to different ethnicities but also to social classes, different generations, and to the genders too!
This is great. I am so looking forward to reading what comes on this blog. Truely it is Christ that we can have a common identity that can unify dispite all of the racial division that is thrown at us. It is in multiracial churches that we can more easily get to what unifies the Body then when we are just with those from our own racial culture.
